This special myofunctional therapy program is designed for children (and adults) who have a habit of sucking their thumb or fingers. The goal of the program is to help the client stop their harmful habit as well as to restore correct function of the mouth after the habit has been stopped.
Individuals who suck their thumb or fingers often experience:
- dental crowding
- narrowing of the upper jaw
- incorrect bite (deep bite or open bite or crossbite)
- back, neck and shoulder pain and tension
- difficulty speaking and articulating some sounds
- airway issues (that are often not identified)
The program’s focus is on helping the client quit their harmful oral habit and restore disrupted function of the oral muscles (such as tongue thrust, low tongue posture, incorrect lip posture and function, improper breathing) that tends to persist after the habit has been stopped.
It consists of fortnightly appointments of myofunctional therapy as well as tools and strategies to move away from the harmful oral habit.
The approach is based on positive reinforcement and empowerment of the client to achieve their goals and change their habits. It is aimed at restoring correct oral function through exercises and habit changes, which are crucial for stable results.
